Don't replace that boiler just yet

Have you been told that your boiler is beyond repair, a new one will be more efficient and save you a fortune?  You might have been misled....

Unfortunately, I have been contacted by 5 new customers in the last month, who have been told by other engineers that their boiler needs replacing.  On each occasion that wasn't the case, and the boilers have plenty of life still in them.

I think the reason people are being recommended new boilers comes down to several factors;

  • Engineers are being encouraged to upsell boilers to drive profits.
  • There is generally less understanding in the industry on how to repair boilers, especially ones older than 20 years
  • There is a misunderstanding among the general public that new boilers are more efficient

The final point is the most prudent.

If I showed you a mobile phone, car, TV, etc., from 10 years ago, it would be clear how much the technology has moved on and the benefits to be gained from a new model.

THIS IS NOT TRUE WHEN IT COMES TO GAS BOILERS, in fact a lot of new boilers still use the same internal components as the previous models.

The images below show the efficiency ratings for two models of an Ideal Logic Combi boiler.  This is one of the most common boilers in the UK and has been in production since 2009.

The first table is from the model from 2010, the second is from the lastest model;

We can calculate that at full load a brand-new model of the Ideal Logic boiler is just 1% more efficient than the same model from 16 years ago.  This would equate to an average annual saving on gas of £10.  NOT WORTH REPLACING THE BOILER FOR.

Note the “Part Load” figure of 98.6% is similar to when car manufacturers quote brilliant miles per gallon results. They might be achievable but, only under perfect test conditions.

But what about boilers that are over 20 years old?

Boilers that were manufactured in the 90's were generally built to last.  They are simple to work on, parts are readily available, and they will last longer than most of the newer boilers on the market today.

Yes, they are less efficient (typically around 70-75%), but using the example above, a new boiler would only give an average annual saving on gas of around £250.

Please get in touch if you have been told the only solution is a new boiler and you would like a second opinion. You could save thousands of pounds.
